True or false
It is deeply disturbing to follow the current discussion, or rather hate speech, on social media profiles of climate activists.
When faced with the question of whether the statements made by scientists are either true or false, it is very convenient to take the position that they are false. Why? Because you don’t have to change your behavior yourself at all. You just do what you always do and you don’t have to leave your comfort zone. Just runs!
However, if you believe what they are saying, you may disagree with the current behavior of our society and you realize that you must change too. Everything you do affects the lives of many others.
When you have chosen the position of doubt, start doing some research on the internet and you will quickly find other voices who doubt as well and they will strengthen your faith. Voices range from doubts that climate change is not human made to that it does not exist at all. Most effective are those who propagate conspiracy theories while putting the enemy on the other side. They tell you that climate activists are actually controlled by scientific or technical elites who want to make huge profits from it.
But think about it for a minute. Who do you think controls the current system? And who is trying to keep the system as it is? Most likely the people who are well established and fear that they will lose their privileged position! So I really wonder why do you trust these people more than the others? Oh yeah sure, because they hire you! They are most likely your employers, your favorite brands and they are telling you that they will have to fire you because the changes will destroy their business model. Too bad, so shut up and do your damn job!
Now be honest to yourself. It’s just lazy to stick with this position. You should do a simple risk assessment. Try to imagine what would happen if those scientific weirdos were right? The economic damage will be way more intense and very soon totally out of your, our and everyone else’s control. Depending on your area of work you will eventually lose your damn job because you or your industry refused to adapt. On top of that, you’ll be confronted with all kinds of unpredictable changes all over the world.
What makes it even worse, most likely you belong to at least 95% of the people who are living by what they earn on their job. So you don’t have a vast amount of wealth to just buy some other livable space on earth and migrate. No, you will stick right where you are and need to live with the consequences. Or do you really think your boss will take you all with him and let you sleep on his shiny new couch? Dude, it’s maybe time to wake up!
The Privileged elites, might they be from whatever side, will for long find ways to escape the grim effects of climate change. Maybe crowned by purchasing a ticket to Mars as a final exit strategy. But believe me, most people will stay right here on planet earth and will eat the shit which is left over.
